I’m excited to kick off an overview of the six-step skincare routine. A full textbook could be written on each and every skincare step so I am going to stick with what you need to know to get your routine going.
Our first step is cleansing which doesn’t get near the attention it should. We all want to learn more about the wrinkle creams, eye treatments, antioxidants and other active ingredients that will make us look young and beautiful. However, if we aren’t cleansing correctly, those products will not work as well as they should.
I recommend cleansing in the evening before bed and simply rinsing your face with warm water in the morning. Be sure to cleanse after working out as well. And yes, the cleansing routine really is that simple.
Here are some Dos and Dont’s for smart cleansing:
Do treat your skin gently— Use lukewarm water, rub gently in an upward circular motion with your fingertips or if your a Clarisonic girl, that works well too. Remember we want to cleanse our skin– not rip it apart! You cannot scrub out a wrinkle, pimple or dark spot. Gentle cleansing prevents your skin from becoming irritated.
Don’t go to bed with your makeup on! Seriously. Yes, I know you might have been really tired last Saturday night but if you had time for that final martini, you had time to cleanse. Sleeping in our makeup lets the residue, dirt and oil remain on our skin expanding pores and creating perfect conditions for a breakout. Your skin uses the time you are asleep to restore itself. That process works better if your face is clean.
Don’t cleanse too much. Cleansing too frequently, too vigorously or with too harsh of a product will cause irritation. Your skin can become dry and red. Those of you with oily skin may welcome a little dryness– but not so fast! Cleansing too much will cause your oily skin to think it is not producing enough oil and your skin will compensate by producing even more oil. Before bed and after workouts really is enough cleansing.
Do use the right product for your skin. This is much like finding the perfect partner– what works for your best friend may not be the best match for you. Use a cleanser appropriate for your skin type and use it 2-4 weeks before you make a decision on whether it works for you. I personally have become a fan of oil cleansing. It’s gentle, moisturizing, cleans pores effectively and removes every last speck of make-up.
Stay tuned each week for the next skincare step! If you make it to week six, I’ll have the printable below updated as a handy reference.
Have a wonderful weekend my lovely friend!
