Hello again!

I’m excited to have you back for toner talk this week! If you missed out on last week’s post about cleansing and want to catch up, you can find it here.

Toner can be a controversial topic. Some will say it’s useless, others say it is only needed for those with oily skin and there are those who swear it works miracles.

My opinion? If I had to choose between retinol and toner, I’d certainly pick the retinol. However, toner is part of my daily skincare routine and here’s why:

  • Toner removes any leftover residue on your face such as sweat, oil or traces of cleanser.
  • Toner balances your skin’s pH. Our skin is naturally acidic– soap is basic. Using toner balances your skin back to its natural pH after cleansing.
  • Toner may treat your skin. Depending on the type of toner you select, you can moisturize, firm, lighten, decrease oiliness or help to reduce fine lines on your skin.
  • Toner helps other products to work better. The light layer of moisture left on your skin by the toner draws the ingredients of your face creams deeper into the skin. Almost every skin product works just a little better when you have that freshly-toned barely damp skin. (Note: this is not true for retinol. Always apply retinol to DRY skin.)
  • Toner refreshes you. I am of the opinion that a skincare routine should not only be effective, but also enjoyable. Personally, I love how my skin feels clean, fresh and renewed after I tone. Skincare is part of my self-care ritual. Just like my daily yoga, I focus on enjoying the process to care for my mind and emotional well-being in addition to my body.

If you’re looking to get on the toner train, I recommend using it twice each day. Us it in the evening after cleansing and in the morning before applying any moisturizers or creams.

Stay tuned for step three next week!
